
Autism
Autism is a pervasive development disorder defined by the presence of abnormal and/or impaired development that is manifest before the age of 3 years, and by the characteristic type of abnormal in all three areas of:
1. Social interaction
2. Communication
3. Restricted, repetitive behaviour.
The disorder occurs in boys 3 to 4 times more than girls.
Symptoms:
1. Restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behaviour, interests, and activities.
2. Lack of responses to other people’s emotions.
3. Lack of modulation of behavior according to social context.
4. Poor use of social signals.
5. Weak integration of social, emotional, and communicative behaviour.
6. Lack of socio-emotional reciprocity.
7. Poor language expression.
8. Relative lack of creativity and fantasy in thought processes.
9. Lack of emotional response to other people’s verbal and nonverbal overtures.
10. Other nonspecific problems such as fear/phobias, sleeping and eating disturbances, temper tantrums, and aggression.
11. Self-injury is fairly common in mental retardation.
