The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned the drug RIMONABANT - an active pharmaceutical ingredient used in several anti-obesity medicines - after studies showed that the drug may cause serious side-effects.
The drug has been associated with increased risk of depression and suicidal thoughts, and has been linked to five deaths and 720 adverse reactions in Europe over the last two years, says a recent FDA news release.
In India, though no serious side-effect of the drug has been reported, the Government suspended the drug after in was stopped in European nations. The Central Drug Standard Control Organisation of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare directed pharmaceutical companies to stop manufacturing the drug and recall the available products in the market, reports drugcontrol.org.
Rimonabant containing anti-obesity drug is patented by Sanofi Aventis, a multinational pharma major, as RIMANOBANT.
Some other common brands of this drug are SLIMONA, ACOMPLIA, MONASLIM, RIMOSLIM, RIOBANT, etc
