Researchers at the University of British Columbia, Canada, have asked consumers to stop the use of codeine as it doesn’t work in some people and the use of this drug can be fatal in many. Codeine is a narcotic analgesic, also used in cough suppressant and cold remedies. According to an editorial published in the Canadian Medical association journal, codeine can cause death even at conventional doses. The problem is especially relevant for infants, say the authors.

Codeine- found predominantly in opium- works by being metabolized to morphine in the body. For infants and young children in particular, this can be deadly, because age appears to be a key factor in susceptibility to adverse effects of morphine.
Codeine can cause drug dependence when taken for prolonged periods and not at the recommended doses.

Many codeine- containing products are now available over the counter in India and many other countries. Codifos tablets, Codine Linctus and Codine Sulphate (both syrup) are some well-known brands of codeine. In combination with other ingredients it is sold under various brand names, e.g. Phensedyl, Ascoril-C, Bronolax, Codokuff, Codoplus, Tossex (all syrup), etc.
